Your support makes a huge difference

Our work with schools has never been more important than it is today. In far too many schools, music is becoming a casualty of competing demands on school time and budgets. Countless studies have demonstrated that music is fundamental to a child’s intellectual, social, emotional and spiritual development, and that children who learn to play a musical instrument do better in other disciplines, such as mathematics, languages, and creative writing. At our school workshops, the Nonesuch Orchestra aims to share the excitement and enrichment of live classical music with children of every background, and hopes to encourage as many of them as possible to embark on learning to play an instrument.

Our lunchtime public concerts are often free of charge to the audience and bring excellent music-making and exciting repertoire to the community.

By giving your financial support to the orchestra, you have the priceless satisfaction of knowing that you are making a real difference to young people’s lives through music.

BECome a friend of the nonesuch orchestra

The Friends of the Nonesuch Orchestra is a scheme that engages our supporters in the development of the orchestra and its schools' outreach programme. With an annual donation of £60 or more, you can help the orchestra fund activities that continually prepare our players to develop and perform in educational workshops in schools. For primary school children we perform both popular and unfamiliar works (from Purcell to Stravinsky), demonstrating musical pitch, rhythm, and the importance of listening.  During these engaging workshops, we encourage participation with any school musicians learning to play musical instruments.

In our secondary schools work, we frequently encourage students to write new compositions for string orchestras that can then be submitted to formal examination boards as part of academic examinations (GCSE and A level). Offering music students an opportunity to listen to their compositions played by a live string orchestra is a real treat for the students and our players. Student string players are often invited to play with our own members in side-by-side projects, giving them rare opportunities to play more advanced works sitting next to experienced musicians.
